BiD Challenge 2008 runs high on Pinoy Innovation

How does an “Echostore Gondola” looks like? What about squash instead of tomato or banana for your catsup? The banana? Use it for soil erosion control and for mulching. And what do we do then with the volumes of Durian husks that fill the dumps? Ever heard of a gourmet kitchen for pets? Or Would you want to try on a new pair of “sprint stilts”? If this year’s entries to the 2008 Philippine Bid Challenge is an indication, then indeed, today’s Pinoy entrepreneur is running high on innovation.

Concluded September 15, more than a hundred entries were submitted for evaluation for the business plan competition. Organizers also saw a marked improvement in the geographical spread of the entries as Mindanao made a very significant participation compared to a single entry last year.

The agricultural sector for both inland and marine gathered the most number of business proposals that varied from food production and processing, improvement of agricultural inputs and services to biotech engine oil. Services for training and education also registered quite a number of entries. Notable too are business plans that address health emergencies such as “dial-a-nurse” and care for the elderly such as “Carehome services.”

Coaches had been given to entrepreneurs who made it to the initial screening so they can complete their full business plans. The top 50 entries will be known by end of November while the top 10 entries will be presented during the Market Place on December 3. Meantime, what then is a “sprint stilts? It’s a shoe that converts from flats to heels and back.@
